Allen Xiao grew up in Edmonton and has seen this city grow for more than 20 years. He has strong links to the community as the majority of his family and friends live here. On his free time, he enjoys jogging and biking in the river valley. In the winter, he is a frequent skier in the Rockies. Allen is also an avid traveler having been to more than 20 countries across three continents ranging from Barbados to Turkey.
Allen obtained nearly all of his education in Edmonton. He obtained a BSc in Psychology in 2011 and a BA in Russian Language and Literature in 2013 with first class honours. In summer 2013, he obtained a Certificate in Russian Language from the Saint Petersburg State University, Russia. Allen obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 2016. During law school, Allen participated in moots, actively volunteered for Student Legal Services for three consecutive years, and taught Legal Research and Writing to first year students during his last year of studies.
He is also fluent in Mandarin-Chinese, and has a limited proficiency in Russian.
Over the course of his volunteering with Student Legal Services and articling under Laurie I. Wood at Wood Law Office, Allen has considerable experience in criminal defence law. He has represented clients in Provincial Court and Queen’s Bench. He has spoken to more than one hundred bail hearings and bail reviews – many of which were successful. Allen has successfully defended individuals charged with assault, impaired driving, mischief and firearm offences.
In addition, Allen has assisted clients with real estate transactions and represented family law clients on matters such as child/spousal support, parenting/access and guardianship in both Provincial Court and Queen’s Bench.
He has appeared before Judges and Justices around Central and Northern Alberta including: Stony Plain, St. Albert, Morinville, Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Wetaskiwin, Ponoka, Camrose, Athabasca, Evansburg, Slave Lake, Grand Prairie, High Level and more.
